Your first visit

What to expect at your initial appointment

At your first psychiatric appointment, your clinician will review your concerns, symptoms, mental health history, family history, substance use history, trauma history (as appropriate), medical history, past and current medications, and treatment responses. You'll discuss your goals for care and have time to ask questions.

This visit focuses on understanding your needs and may include an initial diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Laboratory tests may be ordered when clinically appropriate to support safe and effective treatment. The appointment is confidential, collaborative, and paced to your comfort level.

Helpful to have ready

  • A photo ID and your insurance card
  • A list of current medications and dosages
  • Names of past and current providers
  • Relevant records or prior treatment history
  • Questions or goals you'd like to discuss
